I really have been thinking about what it means to me, this Occupy Wall street movement. Since it seems to lack cohesion and purpose, I really struggled with whether or not to get involved. I hate politics, politicians and anything having to do with them. I hate corporate companies that lie and abuse the system and their workers and YOU and Me. I consider myself a new breed of American... I see others like me out there and I see glimmers of similar ideals in this movement.

Since sitting back and evaluating my purpose in this movement, I asked myself..what can I really do that will make an impact? I hate touting ideals for the sake of moving my lips...so what can I DO? I think to make best use of my time and energy would be to promote every single Indie artist, crafter, writer, musician out there...and plead, ask, implore my friends and family to BUY INDIE this holiday season. If they can't do that, then MAKE your gifts! Some of the best presents I even got were handmade! Handmade/Indie does not = cheap or poor quality. I have found quite the opposite in fact. Handmade items are usually made with the upmost care and love. I have found that indie crafters (a lot of them anyway) tend to repurpose, reuse and recycle more often than naught. They pay attention to materials; they choose organic or fair trade materials, a lot of the time. And they LOVE what they are doing. I can speak for myself here..I LOVE to make things. I put my full heart and soul into everything I make. I love starting with a concept around a person and really thinking about what they like and actually sourcing the material to make them something unique and wonderful.

It is a win/win situation for the buyer and the receiver of the gift. I love to be able to see the person I am buying from...it isn't some anonymous factory in China, spitting out mass produced items by the 1000's. It is a real person. One that loves their craft, one that appreciates their customers.

It is worth it to take the time to check out some Indie sites!

Eclectic Armadillo - Beautiful Meditation Cushions!

I have been working so hard to redo my house and create a beautiful space for my art room. It is a work in progress. I have this table, (will post picture soon) It is from Indonesia and is made from a reclaimed shipwreck. Up until now, I have had no idea what to do with it. My friend says to me, you need to get some beautiful pillows and put them on the floor around the table...

Finding the right pillows has been challenging to say the least...then, low and behold, I stumbled upon this shop in a most random way! I didn't find the pillows, they found me!

What is Mochi, you ask?
Mochi is a traditional food popular in Japanese cuisine, made from specially treated rice Mochi is made by soaking short grain or sticky rice overnight, cooking it, and pounding it into a sticky paste. The paste is molded into shapes like mochi ice cream balls which is a scoop of ice cream covered by the mochi paste or mochi bits which is use as an ice cream topper like sprinkles or eaten on their own as snacks.

My daughter and I ordered some of this delicious Japanese candy from SunnySweetNovember recently! It was a nice treat! We added ours to hot chocolate and icecream and ever ate it straght from the bag! Order a sampler platter and try several flavors! Great for kids and adults too :-)

1940's Vintage Style finds - Hats

Lately my tastes in clothing have been taking on a vintage spin. I am really LOVING the 1940s style at the moment. (with a little 1920's and a little 1950's thrown in)

What were the styles then? What was popular and what did they like? My grandmother would have been in her 20s and early 30s in the 1940s. I know she would have gotten a huge kick out of my new clothing style passion.

First off: Hats, hats and hats!

I also fell in love with this hat from EcoCouture. The price isn't for the feint of heart. But it is really beautiful.

So many of you know that I have turned into a handmade clothing snob, but this sellers clothes has sealed the deal! She is a very sweet lady from Israel. I instantly fell in love with her color pallete of greys, purples, teals and blacks....MY FAVORITES!! So I thought I would give her a try!

"I grew up in Baltimore, but am now living in Greenville, NC. My mom got me into arts and crafts when I was really little (I wanted to help her paint ceramics when I was a baby, so she'd give me a paintbrush, a cup of water, and a rubber ducky. Took me awhile to figure out that it's supposed to change colors when you paint it though!). Ever since then I've loved to draw and create things.
I love to play with Photoshop, make ACEOs, sew, and come up with new geeky things to share with the world!

I have always loved for my drawings to tell a story, rather than just "drawing pretty pictures"- so you may see me draw certain characters multiple times. These characters usually have a personality and back story unique to them and are used for a specific purpose. I love for my art to be more than just a "picture" but rather a tale telling what that picture is and "who" is in it. I hope you enjoy my little stories!

My hobbies when I'm not creating things are watching anime, playing tabletop role-playing games (Dungeons and Dragons; Star Wars, etc), building web-pages, and playing on GaiaOnline[dot]com. I was browsing etsy today and low and behold, found a fabulous artist. I instantly fell in love with her work. I couldn't stop looking at these pieces:
Kuan Yin on The Calmed Sea and What You Cannot See

As you all may or may not know, I am a huge Kuan Yin fan and this is by far one of the best depictions I have seen to date. It is so beautiful, the way the artist used moth wings for her gown and the boat a thrift store find! Simply amazing!

"What you cannot see" really reminds me of the early philosophers and just really evoked a real sense of wonder and exploration! I will definitely be a customer in the future. I implore you to go to her store and look around, for she has many wonderful pieces to browse.

What does she say about herself?
"I am an artist and graphic designer living in the Deep South, USA, not too far from where Flannery O'Connor fed her peacocks.

I am inspired by the white face of the geisha/ghost/mask, which I cannot explain.

The images are archival prints of my paintings and wooden dolls. The dolls are escapees from paintings on wood.

When I make a painting on wood, the figure in the painting will always eventually command "hey, get me out of here" and I will have to saw them out so they can stand on their own, wire joints together so they can bend. Sometimes even make them clothes.

I recently completed some oil paintings on canvas - not scrollsaw-friendly. But even these want me to release them, so I photograph them, cut them out digitally and place them in new places. I think they just don't like having their options limited.

New Opal bird ring sterling silver

Newest metal working ring! Bird ring with a black Australian opal. This is a size 10 and I am wearing it as a thumb ring. Orginally this started out as a size 9, however I overworked the metal and ended up liking it as a thumb ring.
This opal is really pretty. It flashes blue and green and a bit of orange in the right light and angle. In typical "Andee" fashion, I started out setting opals. These tricky little stones are fragile. I managed to drop this one about 100 times while setting this. Luckily, it didnt break, although I had to bribe my class mates to scrounge around on the floor searching for it a few times. LOL

Metal Working - Celtic Goddess Jewelry newest piece!

This piece is still unfinished, but I am so excited about it I HAD to write a bit in my blog. This metal sterling silver Lotus bracelet will have a solic lightening ridge opal set in the center (black with blue flash) I have not yet decided about the linkage, possible prefab chain with a handmade clasp. An opal clasp is probably too delicate in clasp form. After all opals have a hardness of 5 to 6.5 on the mohs hardness scale. (like glass)

Tree of Life - new sculpture by Andee Harston

This tree of life sculpture was a vision that haunted me for years. It embodies the idea of a darkness versus light ideal. The tree itself has a very earthy and dark feel, but the center has an amethyst druzy and each of the hands holds the secret to life, as contained in the nautilus shell (a reoccurring theme in my jewelry and artwork)This piece measures approx 19 inches tall, the amethyst is 2 inches tall, the base at the roots is about 7 inches wide. (more measurements to come soon)It is made from an armature, two types of clay, various paints and a protective finish. It has cracks and an aged look, just like you would imagine an ancient tree would have. Each hand is painstakingly sculpted. No molds were used. Recycled Styrofoam and wire was used for the armature. Please contact me for more info regarding this piece. Currently, I have this for sale in the USA only. International shipping isnt out of the question, but would cost considerably more. Recently I have discovered needle felting. Its very meditative and basically just another form of sculpture. You take roving (which is wool yarn before its turned into yarn) its a fluffy poof. Then you stab it with felting needles oh, like a million times.

INDIE FINDS FIT FOR A GODDESS - SOAP and more!

The first seller I have to rave about is Morganstreet
Not only did she taylor my first order for a secret santa group, but her Lime and black Pepper soap is one of the BEST cold process soaps I have EVER used. And I am a self proclaimed "Soap Addict". I think I have ordered 4 bars now? She uses a process called "super-fatting". Which essentially means that she adds oils and butters to every batch. This soap is touted as being loved by the guys, but let me tell you from personal experience, the girls will love this just as much if not more. RUN, dont walk to Morganstreet's shop and buy your self a bar of this soap. Your skin wont regret it.

Next on the soap finds list is Seaspritesoaps. I have used her cold process soaps for a llloonnnggg time now. It is hard to find a match for quality and presentation. Recently I had the very good fortune to try her Rosemary Mint heel butter and her Rosemary Mint Skin Frosting. What a treat fit for ANY goddess!!! She has an entire basket ready for gift giving of an array of the rosemary mint products. Seaspritesoaps shop is also secret santa friendly. Also check out some of her other products too. I was born and raised on the Jersey Shore and then moved to Los Angeles where I studied Fine Art -Painting at Otis Art Institute. Before long I found myself back in New Jersey where I detoured from art for a while and settled into a normal life fully stocked with a corporate job. Turns out normal isn’t for me. Making things is an addiction. A packrat by nature, I believe all items have a second life and I love using recycled items and supplies that are gentle to the environment.

My work consists of bamboo pendants and mixed media paintings. I use found objects, bamboo, ephemera, old paper, acrylic, goauche, pencils, pens, ink, glitter… and anything else within my grasp. I’m influenced by pop culture, color, music, animals, fashion, movies, magazines and too many artists to mention. There are no heavy messages in my work. I consider my art to be an aesthetic conversation. A lovely chat between friends sometimes relaying a story or an inside joke. The only judgement I make with my art is “am I feeling this or not.” The “not” pile gets recycled for another day.

Adopt an animal! Our newest family member - Carrot

I just posted my 19th indie artist feature Alilsumptinsumptin (see post below or click on her name to visit her shop). Anyway, she makes the most adorable animal beads and also belongs to an etsy street team called ETSY FOR ANIMALS (EFA). It inspired me to do a little write up about our recent adoptee "Carrot".

Carrot was found by a really cool girl named Julie. She was down in south Florida cleaning out her father's (who had just passed away) storage shed. Carrot, who had been dumped apparantly, scoped her out and came up to her. Stray animals have a unique way of picking the "crazy animal lovers" out of a crowd. So Julie tried to find his home to no avail. So she picked him up and took him to the vet, got him his shots, and took him home. Unfortunately, she has 2 senior doggies and, well, Carrot, being practically a pup, wanted to play with them. Needless to say they couldnt keep him. So Julies mom sent out a mass mailer with these pictures:

So you can see why I instantly fell in love with him. So I just wanted to give a big kudos to Julie for saving him, and another one to Julies mom for sending out the email. Also to Alilsumptinsumptin for being so involved in the animal groups that she is involved in.

Carrot is happily adjusting to life with us. Sleeping on the leather couch next to Nanook (the adoptee from the shelter) and just relaxing and getting to know us. He is a really sweet dog. The idea that someone would dump him really angers me.

So if you have a dog, make sure he is nuetered. If you dont, why not consider going to your local shelter or contacting your local rescue group? Even if you cant adopt, they always need foster parents or donations of time, money, food, ESPECIALLY this time of year.

Carrot at our house! He is so strong for his size! It is amazing. He is a "needy dog", which I love. Unlike our Husky (who I love too of course) who is very independent. How can you resist that face?!?!?

I have loved photography since I was given a 110 camera at the age of 7, to capture memories on a family trip. I studied ballet, creative writing, and art in high school but did not take photography classes. Instead, I was "the after school photography club" and was taught by a science teacher how to use the darkroom. The chemicals got into my blood, and after roaming the US for 5 years (Arizona, Florida, Connecticut, & New York) I settled in Carrabassett Valley, Maine, population 200, and home to Sugarloaf USA, and decided to go to University for.... nursing? Well, yes, I did start the pre req courses, but fate stepped in, and after one summer colour printing course and some credit mishaps on the school's part, I switched my major to photography. I graduated from the University of Maine at Augusta with both an Associate of Arts in Photography (Magna cum Laude) in 2000 and a Bachelor of Arts Joint BA in Art and Photography (Magna cum Laude) in 2002. Did I mention that I drove 3 hours round trip to school, 2-3 times a week, for 5 years? If it weren’t for computer courses I would have driven even more… oh, and I met my future husband during this time, who was from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, a 12 hour round trip drive the other direction. I drove back and forth for three years before we married. Now, we live in Banff, Alberta, Canada, with our toddler, Quinlyn, and I WALK EVERYWHERE ;)

SummerSea is one of my all time favorite etsy sellers. I actually found her "on my own" a while back. You see I love Bach Flower Remedies and wouldnt you know that Summersea makes a unique version of those! They not only have the flower essence, like Bach's version, but they also have unique gemstone energies distilled in them! Here is a brief overview taken from the actual listing...

I have always been an artist and one of my earliest art memories is also one of the influences that has stayed with me from the very start. I was four years old and my nursery class had a field trip to a local museum in Rochester NY. I was completely mesmerized by the textiles and beadwork of the native Americans. I don't know how long I stood there just gazing at the work and absorbing all that the creator had to say.

My path as an artist, however, was a duet of both fine and performing arts. I am a (retired) ballerina as well as a published artist, having done illustrations for a CD picture book, "Papa CArdinal Finds Breakfast" by Sandra Wellborn. One of my paintings accompanied and essay I wrote for an Astronomy textbook. (I also hold a Masters Degree in Astrophysics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY and have worked as an astronomer and still teach astronomy as an adjunct professor for University of Maryland University College.)

My work has continued to grow and expand and I now also count myself as a mistress of the art of beadweaving. My paintings and drawings are as important to me as ever, though, and I don't find enough time to do all that I want!

All of my work is one of a kind (with occasional limited editions -- I have a hard time doing things more than once!). I like to play with color and texture, experiment with shape and drape and form.

Human beings, I think, are happiest when they are allowed to create. I know this is true for me.

1. Handmade products are unique. Do you really want the same scarf, mug, earrings, necklace or other item that 20,000 other people have? Of course not! Handmade items are always unique, even if they are the same type of product because they are not made by machines they are crafted by human beings so each piece will have its’ own unique characteristics.

2. Handmade items have personality. Life is not about being blah. Life is about expressing yourself and to do that your things need to have as much personality as you do. If you are happy with buying mass produced items that have no personality off a shelf at Wal Mart think about what that says about you. Don’t you want to express some personality?

3. Handmade items are special. When you get a gift don’t you feel a little bit more loved when someone gives you a handmade gift? Everyone loves getting handmade gifts or wearing something that was made just for them.

4. Handmade items last longer. Because they are made from high quality materials and handcrafted by trained artists items that are handmade last longer than low quality imported mass produced items.

5. Handmade goods are high quality. If you are a person who values the quality of an item more than the price then you already know that handmade items are far superior to mass produced items. While a mass produced item may be cheaper initially is it really cheaper when the item needs to be replaced a month later? When quality matters, go handmade!

6. Handmade items are not made by children in sweatshops in Third World countries making 10 cents a day. Experienced and trained craftspeople make each handmade item. I had some wonderful teachers during my childhood who passed on their passion for nature, geology, crystals and gemstones. I come from a long line of artistic souls on my father's side of the family. My great grandmother was a very talented artist who started painting late in life. She left behind some amazing oil paintings that I will always treasure. She also painted and fired china, she had a fantastic eye for detail and could paint tiny pictures small enough to fit on a thimble. My father was an accomplished, well rounded artist and crafts person and spent many years teaching art in the public school system.

I've been creating unique pieces of jewelry for almost 20 years now, and I'm still excited by the process. I have an insatiable appetite for learning new techniques that push the boundaries of my creativity. Along the way I have also been drawn to studying and practicing various energy healing arts, like Reiki, chakra balancing, Earth based energy medicine, shamanic practices, and Angel Therapy. "KreativeMindz is our company I started a few years ago (a dream I've had forever). Aly and Beau are a husband and wife team, supporting each other through love, laughter and creativity. An-G is one of Aly's best friends, who is a wonderful seamstress and enjoys sewing in her free time, when she isn't being a vet :).

We mostly make clothing (in all sizes and colors), Goddess Wraps™, Hot Packs, Bags, Purses, Wallets, Cuffs and many other cool things! Beau is a very skilled craftsman and carpenter. Check out the Wooden Kreationz section to see some things my husband is now adding. :D

A LITTLE ABOUT US

I was born and raised in a home of artists. My mother a painter, and my father a photographer.
As kids we always were doing some sort of "project". This has continued for me thoughout my life, dipping my hands in all sorts of creative "projects". I found my nitch in sewing. I LOVE creating different things. I picture it in my mind and then it becomes...it is my "gift" I suppose. And I enjoy working with the different fibers to see what can be done with them.
I mostly stay at home and mother our 2 wonderful and beautiful children (9 and 2), my husband and best friend, our 3 dogs and a cat, and our beautiful land. This keeps me busy, as I'm sure you can imagine, but I try to sew on a daily basis, even if it's only 15 minutes. I have been making clothes for many, many years (15 to be exact). I first started when I was 15 and made a patchwork skirt by hand for a show I was going to. As I got older I bought a sewing machine and began making clothes to support my traveling and music habit. I have traveled all over the country selling my clothes at all the wonderful shows and festivals. I miss that sometimes but am so blessed to have my 2 wonderful and beautiful children. When my son got older I started working in the film buisness...helping design sets and such. This was wonderful and fun work, but I truly missed being home. My daughter was born 2 years ago, and with the help of my wonderful and supportive husband, I started to stay home again. I knew we needed the extra income though....so here I am...trying to learn my way around the internet highway.
I am so very thankful to have this opportunity to be able to watch my children grow!!! We enjoy our land and our organic gardens. Hiking, fishing, swimming, playing, camping, fires, drum circles and a show when we can catch one. My husband is a carpenter and loves working with his hands and building wonderful things!

An-G is living in Columbus, where she just graduated from vet school(WHOOHOOO!!!). She is currently engaged to be married next summer! :)
She has been sewing a long time as well, learning some from her mother and some from herself! More to come on An-G. :)"
